Kesari movie is based on the real life historical battle of Saragarhi where 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment fought against the Afghan army in the year 1897. In this battle, ten to twelve thousand Afghans attacked 21 Jat Sikh soldiers who were stationed at an army post. The leader of the Sikhs was Havildar Ishar Singh and the Saragarhi battle is considered as one of history's greatest last-stands by some military historians. A well-known Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar performed the role of leader Havildar Ishar Singh in Kesari movie.


Kesari movie portrays a long fight that eventually saves forts of Gulistan and Lockhart from the Afghan enemies. This movie is being produced by Dharma Productions and marks the Hindi directorial debut for Anurag Singh. The film was released on Holi festival (21st March 2019) and it stars Parineeti Chopra opposite Akshay Kumar. The film has been shot in parts of Wai, Jaipur and Mumbai. Kesari is actually known as Saffron that is used as the background color of the Nishan Sahib, the flag of the Sikh religion upon which is displayed the Khanda in blue.

The Battle of Saragarhi:

1. Approximately ten thousands Afghans reached the signaling post at Saragarhi around 9:00 AM on 12th September.

2. Colonel Haughton who was situated at Fort Lockhart was signaled by Sepoy Gurmukh Singh about the attack at Saragarhi.

3. Haughton said that it was not possible for him to send immediate help.

4. Sikh soldiers decided to prevent the enemy from reaching the forts by fighting till the last breath.

5. The enemy breaks a portion of the wall of the picket.

6. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to rush open the gate.

7. Hand to hand fighting occurred after the wall was breached.

8. The last surviving Sikh defender was Sepoy Gurmukh Singh and he is stated to have killed 20 Afghans. Finally, the Pashtuns set fire to the post to kill him. As he was dying, he yelled repeatedly the Sikh battle cry 'Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal'.

9. Afghans turned their attention to Fort Gulistan after destroying Saragarhi. But the fort could not be captured because they had been delayed too long and reinforcements arrived there on the night of 13 - 14 September.

10. As per the relief party, there were some 600 bodies around the ruined post.

Remembrance of Saragarhi Battle:

1. British build two Saragarhi Gurudwaras: one in Firozpur Cantonment and another in Amritsar to commemorate the men.

2. Sikh military commemoration day is celebrated on 12th September every year to commemorate the Battle of Saragarhi.

3. The filmmaker Jay Singh Sohal and the British Army introduced Saragarhi back into the UK with the launch of the book Saragarhi.
